Did you know you can access the Faculty servers from your home computer? If you have a Windows computer, just look for “Remote Desktop Connection” under Start – All Programs – Accessories. (Depending on the version of Remote Desktop is installed, it might be under the Communications folder within Accessories, rather than directly under the Accessories menu.) Once you start the Remote Desktop connection, just type in “faculty.emhs.net” (without the quotes) to connect to a remote session on the Faculty server. If you have a Mac computer, you’ll need to install the Remote Desktop Connection for Mac, which you can find at http://www.microsoft.com/mac/remote-desktop-client.
You can customize and save a Remote Desktop Connection to easily use it in the future. Here are some settings I would recommend when you save your RDC for the Faculty server. Open RDC and click the “Options >>>” button. This will give you several tabs on which you can customize the way your RDC works.
On the General tab, you can check a box that says “Allow me to save credentials”. This allows you to save your login name and password so you don’t need to enter it each time you connect. NOTE: If you share this computer with your kids, please DO NOT check this box, since doing so could cause a security vulnerability!
On the Local Resources tab, check out the “Local devices and resources” options. If you want to print from the server to your home printer, please let me know the make and model of your home printer – I will need to install the printer driver on your server. Once that’s done, if the “Printers” box is checked under this tab, you can print at home! If you click the “More…” button, you can select the drives on your home computer that you’d like to be able to access on the server (including your C drive, a CD-ROM drive, and even USB card readers).
In the Experience tab, select the type of Internet connection you have at home. If you have a DSL or Cable Modem, you should select “Broadband”. This will automatically tune the display settings to give you the best visual experience without slowing down your session.
On the Advanced tab, under the “Server Authentication” section, make sure “Connect and don’t warn me” is selected.
After changing these settings, when you click the “Connect” button, your settings will be automatically saved for all future connections.
